Structure and function research of double minute chromosomes in tumor

Our lab started the structure and function research of DMs in 1998 and we are the only lab doing the systematic biological research of DMs in China. From the ultrastructure to molecular structure and the function of related genes, we have done detailed analysis into the structure characteristics and sequence function of DMs, disclosed the mechanism of DMs’s formation, as well as explored the relationships between DMs and tumor drug resistance.


Structure study and function analysis of tumor related genes in human malignancies

In 1978, our laboratory launched the cytogenetic research in human solid tumors. From the initial cytogenetic analysis in solid tumors to the molecular-DNA level research in the 1990s, our laboratory has been dedicated in the gene structure and function research in human malignant tumors. In 2001, the study of “Cytogenetic Research in Solid Tumor” was awarded with the second prize of National Scientific and Technological Progress Award.


Study on genetic diversity of different Chinese populations

China has the biggest population of any country in the world, accounting for about 20% of the global population. More than 95% belong to the Han ethnic group, but there are also 55 minorities, providing a rich human resource for evolutionary and population genetic studies. One of our research interests is to preserve the genetic resource of these Chinese populations and study their genetic diversity, as well as investigating the association of genetic variants with common diseases.


Causes, mechanisms and early intervention of inherited diseases and birth defects in Chinese populations

With the development and improvement of human lifestyle, the spectrum of human disease has undergone the structural changes. The incidence of birth defects and inherited diseases increased year by year. At present, the incidence of birth defects in China is 4% to 6%, and about 800 thousand to 1 million defective children were born each year. The congenital heart disease, cleft lip and palate, hydrocephalus, neural tube defects and mental defects have become the major birth defects. Genetic factors also play a key role in some common diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes and tumors. About 1/5 to 1/4 of Chinese population has a variety of genetic diseases.
